Supplemental essay prompt decoder

Paste a supplemental essay prompt. See which classic type it is (why us, community, activity, intellectual curiosity, major, challenge, background or short answer) and how to approach it.

Nothing you type here is uploaded or stored by Onward Scout; the tool runs entirely in your browser.

Supplemental essays are the extra, school-specific essays colleges ask for on top of the Common App personal essay. Most prompts fall into eight familiar types. Paste a prompt into the decoder above to see its type and the approach that works for it.

What are the main types of supplemental essay prompts?

In short

Why us, community, activity, intellectual curiosity, academic interest or major, challenge, background or identity, and short-answer lists. Once you know the type, you know what the reader is checking for, and you can reuse stories across colleges without reusing whole essays.

Why usSpecific fit with this collegeNo"I want to keep the soil sensor project going in Professor Lee's ecology lab."
CommunityYour role and what you'd bringOften"Every Saturday I unlock the repair café at our library and run the sign-in sheet."

Intellectual curiosityHow you thinkOften"I spent a month working out why my sourdough rose faster in winter."
MajorWhere the interest came fromPartly"Fixing my grandmother's hearing aid is how I found electrical engineering."

How long should supplemental essays be?

In short

As long as the prompt allows, which is usually far shorter than the main essay. Around 150 words is common; "why us" essays sometimes allow 250 to 500. Write to the limit, then cut until every sentence earns its place.

Limits vary by school. The University of Illinois asks that each essay should be about 150 words for its own Common App questions[University of Illinois admissions]. UChicago is looser: it suggests about 250–500 words for its "Why UChicago?" essay and says there are no strict limits[UChicago via Common App support]. Check the limit on each prompt before you draft.

How do you write a "why us" supplemental essay?

In short

Name two or three things only this college offers (a program, a course, a professor, a tradition) and connect each to something you have done or want to do. The test is simple: if you could swap in another college's name, rewrite it.

Generic praise ("beautiful campus, great academics") is the most common failure. Specific links ("I want to keep the soil sensor project going in Professor Lee's ecology lab") prove research and fit at the same time. The same rule wins scholarship essays, where the last paragraph must name what that funder values; our scholarship essay outline builder builds that link in.

How do you manage supplements for many colleges?

In short

List every prompt across your colleges, group them by type, write one strong core story per type, and adapt it to each prompt and limit. "Why us" essays are the exception: write each from scratch.

The University of California shows how much choice some schools give: applicants answer 4 of 8 Personal Insight Questions, each up to 350 words[University of California]. Grouping by type turns that into four stories you already have. Check every draft with the Common App word counter, and keep your main essay's story distinct from the supplements.

Frequently asked questions

What are supplemental essays?

Extra essays a college asks for on top of the main Common App essay, usually shorter and specific to that school: why you want to attend, a community you belong to, an activity, or your intended major.

How long are supplemental essays?

Usually 50 to 350 words. Many colleges ask for around 150 words per response; some short-answer questions allow only a few words or characters.

Can I reuse supplemental essays across colleges?

Community, activity and challenge essays can often be adapted. "Why us" essays cannot; they must name things only that college offers.

Are supplemental essays optional if they say optional?

Treat optional supplements as recommended when you have something specific to add. Skipping one at a selective college can read as low interest.
