What is the Common App essay word limit?

In short

650 words at most, and the system will not accept fewer than 250. The limit covers the single personal essay you write for all your Common App colleges. Each college's own supplements have separate, usually much shorter, limits.

The rule comes straight from the application itself. The first-year form instructs applicants to write an essay of no more than 650 words and adds that 650 words is a limit, not a goal[Common App form, 2025–26]. The University of Washington's admissions office notes the application will not accept a response shorter than 250 words in the personal essay box[University of Washington admissions].

What other word limits will you see?

In short

The Additional Information section allows 300 words, the Challenges and Circumstances question 250, the University of California's Personal Insight Questions 350 each, and many college supplements around 150. The counter checks all of them at once.

The Additional Information box shrank recently: Common App cut it from 650 to 300 words starting with the 2025–26 application[Common App, What's new 2025–26]. The University of California asks applicants to answer 4 of 8 questions, and each response is limited to 350 words according to its admissions site[University of California].

Should you use all 650 words?

In short

Use what the story needs, and most good essays need 500 to 650 words. Under 400 often means the reflection is missing; padding to reach 650 shows. Cut description before you cut meaning.

The prompts give room for that reflection. Common App says that in its own survey, over 95% of students, counselors, teachers and admission officers agreed the prompts spark effective essays[Common App, 2022]. Pick the prompt that lets you show how you think, then spend most of your words there.

How do you cut an essay down to 650 words?

In short

Cut the opening paragraph of throat-clearing, merge sentences that make the same point, replace adjectives with one concrete detail, and delete any summary at the end that repeats what the essay already showed. Read it aloud after each pass.

Once the main essay fits, move on to your supplements, which should tell different stories from it. Our supplemental essay prompt decoder tells you which type each prompt is, and the scholarship essay outline builder adapts your main essay's story for funders.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Common App essay word limit?

650 words maximum, and the application will not accept fewer than 250. The limit applies to the personal essay, not to each college's supplements.

Does the Common App count the title in the word count?

If you paste a title into the box, it counts as words like everything else. Most applicants skip a title entirely.

Can I go over 650 words if I upload a file?

No. The essay is entered in a text box that enforces the limit. Colleges that accept extra writing ask for it separately.

Should I use all 650 words?

Not necessarily. Common App's own instructions call 650 a limit, not a goal. Most strong essays land between 500 and 650 words.

Why does my word processor show a different count?

Tools count hyphenated words, numbers and dashes differently. Leave yourself a margin of 10 to 15 words below the limit.
