A cover letter for an internship is a one-page, roughly 250-word letter that says what you are studying, why that company, and what you have already done in classes, clubs or jobs that proves you can contribute. The builder above writes two complete 150-word letters from your details; two or three more sentences of detail on each example take them to about 250 words.

What format should an internship cover letter follow?

In short

Four short paragraphs on one page: who you are and the role, why this company specifically, one or two experiences with results, and what you want to learn plus a thank-you. Use a greeting with a name if you have one and a simple sign-off.

What if you have no work experience?

In short

Treat a class project, a club role, a part-time job or volunteering exactly like work: what you were responsible for and what came of it. "As treasurer of the investment club, I built a portfolio tracker the club uses every week" is real experience.

Employers hire interns to find future employees, so they read for potential. In NACE's 2026 internship survey, employers converted 63.1% of their 2024–25 interns into full-time hires[NACE, 2026]. Your letter is the first sample of how you would work.

Do employers actually read internship cover letters?

In short

Many do. A 2022 survey of hiring managers found most read cover letters, including when they are optional, and many read the letter before the résumé. For competitive internships, a specific letter is one of the few ways to stand out from classmates with similar grades. Our analysis of whether cover letters are necessary covers when skipping one is safe.

In a 2022 Resume Genius survey of 625 US hiring managers, 83% said they read the majority of cover letters they receive[Resume Genius survey, 2022], and 45% said they read the cover letter before the résumé[Resume Genius survey, 2022]. It is a résumé company's survey, so weigh it accordingly; our view is simply that a 250-word letter is cheap insurance. Not sure how long yours should be? What mistakes sink internship cover letters?

In short

A generic "why this company" line, a list of classes with no outcomes, a letter longer than a page, and the wrong company name left from a previous application. Each signals mass-applying, which is exactly what reviewers screen out.

Name one thing about the company you actually looked into: a deal, a product, a team, a report. Then make the employer the subject of your last paragraph, not you. For the opening line itself, our cover letter opening builder gives you more options, and the job search tips hub covers the rest of the process.

Frequently asked questions

How long should an internship cover letter be?

About 250 words, three or four short paragraphs, never more than one page. Recruiters reading hundreds of internship applications reward brevity.

What do I put in a cover letter if I have no work experience?

Class projects, clubs, part-time jobs, volunteering and research. Describe one or two the way you would describe a job: what you did and what came of it.

Who do I address an internship cover letter to?

The recruiter or hiring manager by name if the posting or LinkedIn shows it; otherwise "Dear Hiring Manager". Avoid "To whom it may concern".

Do internships really read cover letters?

Many do, especially smaller teams and competitive programs. In one 2022 survey of hiring managers, most said they read cover letters even when they are optional.
